take the pledge   Change a Light, Change the World

What if you could make a difference when it comes to global warming? A difference that was as simple as changing a light bulb. What if that new light bulb reduced carbon emissions and lasted twelve times longer?

Would you do it? Would you change a light bulb?

But, these are not just any light bulbs. They are compact fluorescents (CFL), and are incredible energy savers. You've seen them around, they are the uniquely spiraled bulbs, that remind you of childhood cones of soft serve. But their looks are not the only interesting point. They use 75 to 80% less electricity compared to a traditional light bulb, or incandescent. That's quite an impact to the environment, when you rely on the purchasing power of the United States.

If each American home purchased one CFL bulb to replace a traditional bulb, the sheer amount of energy saved could power all the homes in Rhode Island and Delaware. It would power a whole city of 1.5 million people. But most impressively, it would counteract the greenhouse gas emissions of 1.3 million cars.

CFLs benefit not only the environment, but also your bank account. While they may cost more than a traditional bulb at purchase, they last significantly longer. In fact, they can last between five and ten years. Your average incandescent will last, at best, a year. Image in one year, not purchasing light bulbs. Imagine three or five years. CLFs also utilize less energy, making it cheaper to use them. Replace all the bulbs you can in your house, and you will see an impact on your electric bill. It's simple math. One CFL purchased will remove up to eight regular bulbs from production.

Reduce emissions, save money, change the world. Will you do it?

Why do I care?

I am sure many of you are wondering why I would take the time to make this. It's simple. To me, the new swirl CFL bulbs are ingenious design. Practical design is something I don't see enough coming from major corporations. CFLs, to me, are the perfect combination of design, function and environmental conscience. When I see such intelligence in the corporate world, I have to stop and praise it.

I also contribute to it. I have replaced six bulbs in my house, and have seen two amazing things. One, I've seen no decrease in the light quality and tone. This was a huge issue with older CFLs. It's been solved. And two, I've seen an impact on my electric bill. While that impact is only a few dollars, it has shown me that doing the right thing can be profitable. I have pledged to replace my remaining bulbs with CFLs, because I have witnessed a difference in my energy consumption. I want to see more. And the more I can do on my own, the more I know I change the environment for the better.
